The great dane originated in Germany some time in the 14th century. The great dane was made and developed as a boar hound by the germans. As you read on the first page, great danes are included in the working group which means that they were bred to be a hunting dog. They would particularly hunt boar and that is why they were called the boar hound. The germans say that the dane is one of the most elegant and distinguished of the giant breeds.
